HEART Model of Mediation — Sarthak Samwad · Sarthak Samadhan · Anant Madhyasthata — Meaningful Dialogue · Meaningful Resolution · An Enduring Culture of Mediation
This website is a vision and an endeavour to promote holistic, meaningful and humane approaches to mediation and conflict resolution. It seeks to contribute to the continuing development of mediation theory and practice by bringing contemporary professional knowledge into a disciplined dialogue with Indian wisdom traditions.
The Central Inquiry
The central inquiry is whether insights from India's philosophical and civilisational traditions can deepen, enrich and strengthen modern approaches to conflict engagement. The purpose is not to replace contemporary mediation theory, nor to introduce religious doctrine into professional practice. It is to identify relevant insights concerning judgement, counsel, self-mastery, responsibility, human agency and relationships, and to translate them carefully into secular, plural and professionally usable knowledge.
The Guiding Vision
Its guiding vision is expressed through Sarthak Samwad · Sarthak Samadhan · Anant Madhyasthata — meaningful dialogue, meaningful resolution and an enduring culture of mediation. The underlying idea is simple: before deciding how a conflict should be resolved, we should first understand what the conflict truly requires.
The Work Behind This Endeavour
This endeavour reflects the professional, academic and intellectual work of Dr Ashvin Bhalekar — Mediator, Author and Researcher in Mediation and Conflict Resolution. His work brings together legal experience, contemporary mediation scholarship, professional ethics and selected insights from Indian wisdom traditions. The larger objective is to explore how these different sources of knowledge can contribute to a deeper and more mature understanding of conflict and its resolution.
The HEART Model of Mediation
At the heart of this work is the HEART Model of Mediation — Holistic, Empowering, Adaptive, Rational and Transformative. HEART emerged from an interdisciplinary synthesis of contemporary mediation theory and selected philosophical insights from the Bhagavad-Gītā. It approaches mediation not merely as a process for settlement, but as a framework for professional judgement, party autonomy, meaningful participation and responsible conflict engagement.
Beyond the Mediation Room
The wider vision of Anant Madhyasthata carries this inquiry beyond the mediation room. It seeks to foster a culture in which individuals, professionals and institutions engage conflict with greater clarity, dignity, discernment and proportionality.
Mediation, in this vision, is not simply a procedure for resolving disputes. It is a cultivated professional and social capacity to engage disagreement wisely and constructively.
